Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question (courtesy of [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith): For those of us who do yarn crafts, what kinds of yarn do you prefer working with and why?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

October Garden Tasks

October wildlife gardening tasks feature the middle of fall. Keep on top of harvesting so it doesn't get away from you. Weeding should be winding down in many areas. Some flowers need deadheading, but most wildflowers don't. By this point, many plants have set seeds. Collect seeds, especially native ones, to save for next spring. For species that need cold stratification before they will sprout, you can either chill them in a refrigerator or plant them in a bed during fall and let the winter chill them naturally.

If you want to hang roosting boxes for cold weather, this is a good opportunity for that. If you haven't already hung your birdfeeders, do that now. Bring out any that you already have and clean them before filling and hanging them. It's a good time to buy new ones if you want to do that. The fall migration is peaking in many regions, but northernmost ones are emptying out. For most species, seeds are the best offerings at this time. Wait to put out suet or similar foods until the weather gets colder. It is safe to mow fields, as ground-nesting birds have completed their cycles. Birdwatching peaks in mid-fall as the migrations boom. Visit your local parks and waterways for the best viewing.

Today is mostly sunny and sweltering.

I haven't fed the birds yet, but I saw a wren, possibly a Bewick's wren or Carolina wren, at the hopper feeder. :D

EDIT 10/1/25 -- I fed the birds. I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I heard a squirrel chattering but didn't see it.

EDIT 10/1/25 -- I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 10/1/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 10/1/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 10/1/25 -- The tree guy came! We walked around the yard discussing what needs to be done. Based on a preliminary estimate (we should get solid numbers tomorrow) we should be able to get the branches cleared beside the driveway, the parking lot cleared, the path to the east edge and the orchard path restored, and the tree-sized branch removed from the south lot. Small stuff will be chipped for mulch, large stuff will be cut down for firewood. :D 3q3q3q!!! I really hope it comes together.

I also watered the irises, telephone pole garden, savanna seedlings, and old picnic table.

As it is now dark, I am done for the night.

Bacon Jammin' Chicken Extravaganza Sammich
Prep: 10 Min Cook: 25 Min

Ingredients

JALAPENO BACON JAM
1 lb good quality bacon, fried and crumbled (or cut up and fry)
1 medium onion, chopped
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped
3 clove garlic, chopped
1/2 c light brown sugar, packed
1/4 c strong brewed black coffee
1/4 c maple syrup
1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
1 Tbsp grainy spicy brown mustard

SANDWICH
2 slice favorite grilling bread per sandwich per serving
2 to 3 oz sliced chicken (deli, roasted, grilled or fried) per sandwich
2 slice cheddar cheese per sandwich
Dijon mustard
Bacon jam
Fried bacon slices

Directions

1 BACON JAM: Cut bacon in 1-inch pieces. Fry in large skillet over medium heat until crisp (don't overcook). Drain on paper towels. Discard all but 2 Tbsp. bacon grease. NOTE: I keep my bacon grease in the fridge for other recipes.
2 Sauté onion, garlic and pepper in reserved bacon grease over a medium heat for about 4 to 5 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Return bacon to pan; add remaining ingredients. Bring to a simmer, reduce heat and continue to simmer for about 20 minutes or until thickened.
3 SANDWICH: Heat griddle over medium heat.
4 Butter the outer sides of bread; place on griddle. Spread mustard on inside of each piece of bread, layer each piece with a slice of cheddar cheese, and then add layer of chicken on one piece, top chicken with bacon jam and then place 2nd cheese, bacon slices and bread on top. Brown on each side, flipping occasionally to ensure cheese melts and that you don’t burn bread.

Today is mostly sunny and sweltering. It's 85°F here. The migration is heavily impacted -- we drove past the lake yesterday and there was no sign of waterbirds, whereas normally this time of year there would ducks, pelicans, etc. in fairly large flocks.

I fed the birds. I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

EDIT 9/30/25 -- I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 9/30/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 9/30/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

I watered the telephone pole garden, savanna seedlings, patio plants, new picnic table, and old picnic table.

Cicadas and crickets are singing.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.
